Vision for the Centre:
A molecular approach to the problem of cancer in patients and populations

The Barts-London Centre as the largest constellation of CR-UK clinical and translational groups in London. Over thirty principal investigators have come together to develop a coordinated molecular and cellular approach to the problem of cancer in patients and populations. The Centre concept enables us to rationalise resources, improve the use of major equipment, establish coordinated biological service facilities, share technology platforms and technical expertise, and develop new translational research programmes.

The strategy of the Clinical Centre will be built on an integrated molecular and cellular approach to the problem of cancer in patients and populations. It will cover a spectrum of molecular and genetic research for target identification in haematological and solid malignancies (gynaecological, breast, skin, pancreatic and prostatic); cell biology and genetic reconstruction models (keratinocyte, breast and pancreatic); cancer epidemiology, screening and intervention; targeting, imaging and therapy of cancer.

The Centre is physically close to Cancer Research UK's London Research Institute at Lincoln’s Inn Fields and thus is in an ideal geographical position to develop a special relationship of benefit to each partner. The potential for rapid development of translational programmes will be actively promoted at all levels in the organisation.

Genomics research is strong in the Barts-London Centre and is underpinned by core facilities in molecular pathology and proteomics to interface with both patient-based and population-based applications. The Barts-London Centre has well coordinated support facilities - particularly imaging and tissue-based resources, and centralised equipment parks.

Key developments in the Centre:

Molecular Pathology

A state of the art Molecular Pathology Facility including genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, flow cytometry and molecular imaging. The Centre provides

  • full Affymetrix microarray support with an embedded bioinformatics group
  • laser-assisted microdissection and tissue microarray technology, as well as reagent development for clinical applications
  • automated processing and hybridisation technology with Ventana Discovery platform
  • confocal and digital microscopy suites with research histopathology expertise

Molecular Oncology and Stem Cell Biology

  • Innovative programmes in target identification and treatment development in epithelial and haematological malignancies. The Centre brings together groups working on cell survival, cytokine networks and migration signalling as well as gene therapy for cancer on the Charterhouse campus.
  • World-renowned programmes in keratinocyte and gastrointestinal cell biology linked to the Adult Stem Cell Biology Centre, concentrated at the new Institute of Cell & Molecular Sciences on the Whitechapel campus.

Imaging and targeting

  • The Centre is building on the successful activities of the Nuclear Medicine Group to expand into novel molecular imaging technologies to interface with the programmes in cell biology and experimental therapeutics.

Epidemiology, Screening and Intervention

  • The Centre is developing molecular pathology platforms to support population-based epidemiology studies with particular focus on virus-related cancers.
  • A clinical trial methods group is established with relationships between the oncology therapeutics programme and the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine.

Early phase clinical trials of novel therapeutics

  • An early phase clinical trials group has been established, with special emphasis on gene and viral therapies. The Clinical Research Centre in Barts & The London Trust is developing as a robust and reactive resource enabling investigators to fulfil the vision of translating discoveries to patient benefit.
