Our research is driven by the hypothesis that the leucocytes, cytokines
and chemokines found in tumours are more likely to contribute to cancer
growth, progression and immunosuppression, than they are to mount an effective
host anti-tumour response.
Hence we study the role of cytokines, chemokines and inflammatory stroma
in the development and spread of epithelial tumours. We aim to translate
our work into advances in clinical practice by providing insights into
cancer susceptibility; and by undertaking clinical trial of novel therapies.
In our work we use a range of animal models; cell lines and primary cell
cultures; clinical specimens and patient samples from clinical trials;
focusing primarily on two epithelial cancers, cancers of the ovary and
skin. Close interaction between the lab and clinic is central to these
aims. We aim to achieve this by collaboration with our NHS colleagues
at Barts and The London hospitals; with other labs in our Cancer Research
UK Clinical Centre; by training clinician scientists and clinical fellows
in the lab, and by collaborations with other Cancer Research UK clinical
centres throughout the UK.
