What is the value of a personal
information file for patients with cancer?
Outline
An information file for cancer patients
has been devised following wide consultation with patients,
carers and health professionals. This was done under the auspices
of the National Cancer Alliance (NCA). The Teamwork File comprises
a range of different elements, including generic written information
and a personal health diary that contains space for patients
to write notes and keep a record of their health and healthcare.
We are implementing and evaluating the file across the South
East London Cancer Network and in partnership with the Oxford
Cancer Network and the NCA. This is part of the Cancer Services
Collaborative, a national programme aimed at improving the
outcomes and experience of patients with suspected or diagnosed
cancer. The Cancer Services Collaborative seeks to improve
the 'whole system' of care, with a key component being the
patient and carer experience. The methodology involves introducing
small-scale changes, closely evaluating the impact of those
changes and further refining processes as required. Using
this methodology, we are examining different approaches to
the implementation of the Teamwork File and patients' and
health professionals' perceptions of the utility of the File.
